On October 30 and November 4, 2025, Professor Jan van Zwieten, President of the Netherlands Business Academy, delivered a series of lectures on the topic “Mediation in the Netherlands” for participants of three programs titled “Basic Skills of a Mediator.” During the sessions, Professor van Zwieten shared practical experience in applying mediation across various fields and highlighted the importance of mediation in Ukraine’s post-war recovery.
The professor emphasized that successful mediation is based on understanding participants’ psychology, active listening, neutrality, and empathy. He stressed that the mediator’s role is not to make decisions for the parties but to help them independently reach a fair and realistic solution.
The meetings covered:
- Features of facilitative mediation and the importance of deep psychological knowledge;
- The structure of the mediation process, including preparation stages, contract signing, and confidentiality compliance;
- Ethical and moral dilemmas faced by mediators, particularly in cases of conflicts of interest or breaches of neutrality;
- The role of emotions and empathy in building trust between parties;
- Practical cases from the speaker’s experience—working with military personnel as well as resolving family and financial disputes.
At the end, Jan van Zwieten emphasized that mediation is not only a tool for conflict resolution but also a path to justice, mutual understanding, and harmony in society.
