Brendan Duprey | Strategy & Innovations

Brendan is the founding Director of the Sustainable Kazakhstan Research Institute and Associate Professor in Sustainable Development at Narxoz University in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

His current research work on integrating sustainability values, skills and knowledge into the formal educational system of the Republic of Kazakhstan was submitted by the government as the national nomination for the Japan-UNESCO Global Prize on ESD. Moreover, applied research work he has conducted in the field of nature-based solutions to industrial waste was presented as a best practice within the framework of the UNECE Convention on Mine Tailing Safety and Industrial Accidents (56 countries). He currently is a member of the Interinstitutional Working Group for Mine Tailing Safety of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the National ESG Club.

Moreover, from 2017-2018, Brendan led a research team in Ukraine for the Truth Hounds and developed an innovative methodology to identify the environmental impacts of war in Eastern Ukraine. Evidence collected by his team was submitted as evidence to the International Criminal Court.

Brendan also has taught a variety of courses ranging from climate change and renewable energy technologies to ecology and sustainable development. Brendan holds a PhD in Environmental Sciences and Policy from Central European University. His academic interests include: EU integration, environmental impacts of war, climate change, sustainable development, implementation, public policy, multi-level governance, educational reforms through ESD and transformational change management.
